If you are young woman aged around 20-30, who for a few years suffering from excruciating pain and cramps during your periods, tried every remedy possible – painkillers, hot water bags, pills – but nothing seemed to help improve the situation then you should know that unbearable preiod pain is not always normal.

What Is Dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstruation, and it is categorized into two types: Primary and Secondary.

  • Primary dysmenorrhea refers to common menstrual cramps that occur in the absence of any underlying medical condition. These cramps typically begin within a day or two of the start of menstruation and are often accompanied by symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, and headaches. The pain is usually cramp-like and improves after the first 48-72 hours of menstruation.

  • Secondary dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying condition such as endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis. The pain associated with secondary dysmenorrhea tends to be more intense, persistent, and can occur before, during, and after menstruation.

Treatment: Over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen and home remedies such as applying heat are effective for many people.  

Lifestyle Influence: Regular Exercise , a balanced diet, and stress reduction may help alleviate symptoms.  

When to Seek Help: Severe pain unresponsive to medication or other symptoms like Heavy Bleeding may indicate a serious condition and require medical attention.
